Chapter 15

Lucian

I felt her body twitch in my hold and, slowly, I opened my eyes and looked down at her. I couldn’t see her face from the angel she was laying on my chest, but when I heard the word “Stop” come from her lips, I knew she was having a bad dream.

Carefully, I tried to wake her and felt wetness on my shirt. Sliding my arm from around her, I looked to see tears streaking down her cheeks as she slept. “Rylee,” I said softly, trying to shake her away.

“Please,” I heard her say barely above a whisper, and it wasn’t what she said but the way she said it that told me she was struggling.

“Rylee, baby, you have to wake up,” I urged and shook her harder.

Her head rocked to the side as I tried to get her to open her eyes, and just as I was about to yell her name, she blinked her green eyes open and looked up at me with confusion.

“Lucian?” she asked. “What’s going on?”

I brushed a piece of hair from her forehead as I looked down at her and explained, “You were having a bad dream, and I couldn’t get you to wake up.”

She looked around and sat up next to me as she woke. I could tell she was trying to remember the dream, and when she said, “I don’t remember what it was,” I had no reason to doubt her.

Having been trained in evasive techniques and how to tell when someone was being dishonest, I knew she wasn’t hiding something from me. I knew she was struggling against some unknown enemy while she slept in my arms. Just the thought of someone causing her pain, real or imaginary, caused the monster inside me to rattle the door to his cage, demanding to be set free.

There wasn’t anyone I wouldn’t destroy to keep her safe, and I feared it was the so far nameless man who was causing her misery. I trusted she would tell me who he was, but that didn’t mean I wouldn’t find him before that. With Devlin and James looking for him, and I assumed Rhys also, I knew it was a matter of time before his blood was staining my hands.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I asked, and she nodded while she stifled a yawn.

“I didn’t even realize I was dreaming. I’m sorry if I woke you.”

“You didn’t wake me. I just worried when I couldn’t get you to wake up,” I admitted, and she ducked her head, looking embarrassed. I lifted her chin with one finger and waited until her gaze locked with mine. Smiling at her, I wanted to reassure her. “I’m not going anywhere unless you tell me to, and I don’t care if you wake me up ten times a night. I want to be there for you, in whatever capacity you’ll let me.”

“That sounds nice,” she returned, and I leaned over and softly kissed her lips.

The salty taste from her tears
